WBC mourns the passing of John Cooney

Super featherweight boxer John Cooney, 28, passed away following his defeat to Welshman Nathan Howells in Belfast last week.

The Irish boxer suffered an intracranial haemorrhage and underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain following the fight at the Ulster Hall.

Cooney was assessed by the medical team in the ring before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where he passed away a week later.
