World Boxing Council super lightweight champion Alberto Puello from the Dominican Republic will face and fight mandatory challenger Sandor Martin from Spain on March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The fight will be part of the card headlined by Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis vs. Lamont Roach.
This ides of March bout, marks a collaboration between PBC and Top Rank, the latter representing Martin of Spain (42-3, 15 KOs).
It’ll be the first defense for Puello (23-0, 10 KOs).
This is the second consecutive time that the undefeated champion appears on Davis’ undercard. His interim title win against Gary Antuanne Russell occurred on the June 15 card of last year at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Puello was promoted to Absolute Champion when Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs; 1 No-Contest) announced he was moving up a division.
Martin has been the mandatory challenger for over a year. He is well known for his October 2021 astounding victory over former four-division champion Mikey Garcia (40-2, 30 KOs).
More than a year later, Martin fought a fabulous, gritty fight against Teofimo Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) in which he lost by a close decision.
This Thursday, both fighters were face to face at the final press conference, prior to the big night fight.
“The training camp has been excellent and I feel that I am in the best moment of my career. I do not underestimate the quality of any rival and I always prepare assuming that the next one is the best and Martin is no exception,” said the champion.
Then…Martin said:
“On Saturday there will be a new super lightweight world champion and until that day Puello’s undefeated record will survive. This is my opportunity to be world champion and take that crown to Spain. I know that my life will change starting next Saturday.”
